The Town of Durham NH has put in effect the new codes, NH allows municipalities to be more strict than the State adopted codes. My friend thinks he is the first one in the state to build a new house in accordance with the new code. Unintended consequences are a construction cost of about 150% of the previous code which had energy efficient provisions, and since the house is so tight, in this high humidity area, running two dehumidifiers constantly in the summer, at a high engergy cost, even when A/C is not needed.

Codes mean nothing unless the person enforcing them know what he or she is enforcing. For homes, commercial, industry and all building that are built in America is either over sized or under sized for heating and conditioning. The insulation are not installed right. In Florida i have seen million dollar home with one inch foam insulation put in the walls, In the north i have found no heating unit sized by manual j and d. Same on air conditioner. Could go on and on. Duct design is sized and installed buy contractors that have no idea how to do a heat loss or duct design. ALL OVER THE USA IT IS DONE THIS WAY NO CITY,COUNTY, OR STATE REQUIRES A HEAT LOSS OR HEAT GAIN BY MANUAL J AND NO DUCT LAYOUT BY MANUAL D. INSPECTORS DO NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO THESE VERY NECESSARILY PROGRAMS.
