Building energy code work in Maine

Consumers Union and Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships are working with local Maine organizations to help promote local adoption of the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC). MUBEC matters to Maine because it results in safe, healthy, energy-efficient construction and reduces citizens’ energy costs and dependence on heating oil.

Currently, MUBEC is only an “opt-in” code for all communities under 4,000. By not opting-in to MUBEC locally, Mainers are potentially vulnerable to:

  • Shoddy and unsafe new construction
  • Higher energy bills and less comfortable homes
  • Unequal playing field for builders and developers
  • High dependence on heating oil to last another generation

Maine Building Officials Say Energy Codes Benefit Consumers

Another survey showing that energy codes are beneficial to consumers! In a survey of 40 Maine Building Officials and Inspectors Association members at their general membership meeting on March 15, 2012 , a strong majority were in favor of energy codes.

83% – Energy codes should be enforced like other safety and quality standards of construction.

90% – Energy codes protect homeowners and renters from excessive energy costs.

80% – Energy standards will help to ensure quality home construction.

78% – Energy codes make homes more comfortable to live in.

73% – Energy codes help stimulate the economy and create green jobs.
